What makes Drama Kids Musical Theatre Academy different than other Performing Arts programs out there?
This is a performance done DRAMA KIDS style. Our students are still our #1 focus. We focus on BUILDING CONFIDENCE; NOT on the SHOWS! No pressure. No singing or dancing experience required and every student enrolled is an important member of the cast. Wait, so if I enroll for the Musical Theatre Academy, am I signing up for one class or two? Fair question! When you register for our “Take 2” Musical Theatre Performance Academy, your registration INCLUDES enrollment in our Creative Dramatics or Jr/Sr Acting Academies. That's double the drama, without having to worry about enrolling twice! Why do I have to participate in Creative Dramatic or an AA? Can't I just do the musical? In order to participate in our Take 2 Musial Theatre Performance Academy, students MUST be currently enrolled in a regular Drama Kids skill class. Our skill classes are a CRUCIAL component to the success of this performance (as this is where the foundation is laid). Unfortunately, no exceptions will be made. Why is the musical a combined class? Our “Take 2” Musical Theatre Performance Academy is open to Drama Kids ages 8-18. A wider age range allows for bigger casts, which makes for more diverse casting! Plus, our Creative Dramatics students can learn a lot from our teen actors… and vice-versa! Our musical classes will be taught by two teachers, so a lot of breakout work will be involved! This allows us to focus on and cater to each age group involved, so they can reach their greatest potential. I looked over the schedule, and it looks like my Creative Dramatics student only gets one hour of rehearsal for the musical, instead of two like the Acting Academy. Why is this? Good eye! To put it simply, our Creative Dramatics class is a two-hour performance class, and our Acting Academy is a one-hour skill based class. Therefore, our Creative Dramatics musical rehearsal time is shortened so each age group gets three hours of drama! (PS! There may be times when we request students to stay the entirety of our musical rehearsal to work individually, as well as leading up to the final performances for dress rehearsals and run throughs.) Two performances seem like a lot to handle, I'm not sure... Never fear! We will cater to each of our students’ needs and comfort levels. If your child is itching to take on more responsibilities, we will give them more! If your student is hesitant, we are happy to give them less! I have no singing or dancing experience; can I still join? Absolutely! There is no prior singing or dancing experience required! Plus, our choreography is created with non-dancers in mind, so it’s easy to learn, and tutorials will be readily available online to practice at home with! That being said, our Advanced Creative Dramatics & Acting Academy classes do require prior drama/performing experience before enrolling. We delve into advanced skill-development, so it is crucial that students have a basic foundation in the Performing Arts before taking one of our 3-hour classes. Why are you doing a musical in the Fall AND the Spring? You asked, we listened! After reviewing the results of our Acting Academy survey, over 70% of our students loved our first try at a musical last year and wanted MORE! (And we had a lot of fun too!) We also wanted our students that weren’t sold on the musical to have the option to do traditional improv and/or plays in the Fall. More Drama is always a good thing! ;) Do I have have to do a musical for both the Fall and Spring Sessions? Can I just do a musical in the Spring? Yes! In fact, all of our Fall 1-hour Acting Academy classes are automatically upgraded to our 2-hour "Take 2" Performance Academy experience in the Spring, enabling everyone to participate in our Spring Musicals at the Egg! *The only class that does not perform at the Egg in the Spring, is our Creative Dramatics skill-based class in Loudonville (Thu) for K-5th graders. Why did the tuition increase? Here’s the good news. You are still paying the same hourly rate. (Actually, a little less!) But your Drama Kid is getting more hours in the classroom per week. Putting on a full scale musical takes an enormous amount of time and effort. That is why we previously spent many additional, unpaid hours outside of class rehearsing and preparing for the performance. (Not to mention hiring additional staff to help get us there!) This increase in tuition has allowed us to hire an additional teachers & assistants to make the rehearsal process even smoother! What do the performance fees cover? Our $75 performance fee covers the cost of materials, 3rd party licensing & royalty fees, and end-of-year student awards. Only one performance fee will be charged per family, per school year. Do I have to pay a separate performance fee for each session? No! The $75 Performance is charged once annually and covers BOTH the Fall and Spring Sessions. By signing up for both sessions, you end up saving! How much will the ticketing fee end up costing? Based on current venue costs, each family will be charged b/w$10-15 per guest. Tickets for our Fall Musical Performance at UAlbany cost $10 per guest (tickets are limited), while a flat $50 per family is charged for unlimited guests to attend our Spring performance at the Egg.
