PIRATE FUN FACTS
Pirates weren't just men - there were plenty of ladies sailing the seven seas back in the day! Some of the most famous women were Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Ching Shih, and Grace O'Malley. Pirates really wore eye-patches - but not because they were missing an eye! It’s been said that one of the reasons pirates wore eye patches was to help keep one eye adjusted to night vision, so they could see below deck in the dark. The idea we have of pirates making their enemies walk the plank is probably totally fictional! (However, they did like to maroon people!) Not all treasure was made up of gold and silver... the majority of a pirate's treasure consisted of food, lumber, cloth, and animal hides! Real pirates probably never said "Arghhh!" This representation of pirates was popularized by Hollywood in the 1950s. No one has ever found a real pirate's treasure map. They were great hiders! Maybe you'll be the first..? IMMORTAL FUN FACTS Calypso is the Greek goddess of Silence... which makes you wonder why she loves such boisterous and loud music! Circe is the Greek goddess of Transformation and Magic, but is also commonly depicted as a witch or sorceress in Greek mythology. Neptune is the god of the sea for the Romans, but in Greek mythology his name is Poseidon. There are many different kinds of Nymphs in Greek mythology. There are forest nymphs, sea nymphs, mountain nymphs, flower nymphs... and even SHEEP nymphs! One of the earliest Mermaid legends comes from Ancient Syria in 1000 BC! Many ancient people believed that Aquamarine (the gemstone of the sea!) was made from mermaids' tears. The infamous Sirens originally didn't start out as mermaids - they were bird women in Ancient Greece!
