Right off the bat, we want to say THANK YOU for helping your Drama Kid film their at-home scenes! We know you weren't anticipating adding "movie director" to your list of new jobs, and we are eternally grateful for your help in making this happen! The great news is that the majority of the coaching for these at-home scenes will be done in class itself! This is why we are asking that all at-home film assignments be completed the night before your Drama Kid's next scheduled class. This way our coaching will still be fresh, which means less takes and avoiding a mad scramble for shots in mid-June! *Furthermore, if your Drama Kid would like to re-shoot any of their in-class Zoom footage at home, they are more than welcome! Perhaps they weren't happy with a take, or there were some technical difficulties. Send us any reshoots and our editors will pick the best shot for the film! So, what is a shot list? And how do you decipher it? Don't stress! Our goal is to make your at-home filming as simple as possible, and the shot list will be your guide! A shot list is a document that maps out everything that will happen in a scene of a film by describing each shot within that film. It serves as a kind of checklist, providing everyone with a sense of direction, preparedness, and piece of mind that everyone is accounted for! As you can see, our shot lists are divided into 8 columns...
Deciphering the action and storyboardsOkay, so what on earth does "MEDIUM WIDE" mean? Have no fear! Check out our mini camera-shot glossary below! And don't stress about getting it exactly right. Here's something we teach our Film Academy students: do what YOU think looks good! Still have questions? Don't be afraid to ask! Feel free to email our editors with filmmaking questions:

While your Drama teachers will be taking the lead on filming during class time, there is still some preparation needed by our Drama Kids to make sure our Zoom filming goes off without a hitch! Take a look at the tips below to make sure your Drama Kid is getting the most out of these important film classes! KNOW YOUR LINES (AND CUES!): We know, we sound like a broken record! But it's just as important to know your lines on film as it is on the stage! The better you know your lines, the faster we can film our scenes, and the less you have to shoot at home. The GREAT NEWS is that we will let you know which scenes we will be filming the following week, so you don't have to focus on the whole script each week! Hopefully that will take some pressure off of your practice sessions! FIND YOUR LIGHT: Make sure the room you are in has good lighting! If your device is easily portable, try to find a bright window and position it so you are facing the window and the light is hitting your face. If your class is filmed after the sun sets, just make sure that there is ample lighting in the room you're in. The brighter you are, the clearer you will appear on zoom. QUIET ON THE SET: Do you have a noisy sibling? A dog that loves to bark at squirrels? Try to find a quiet room in the house to film in to avoid any possible distractions! BE IN COSTUME: Be sure your Drama Kid is in their costume at the start of class. We have all of our film shoots scheduled out to the minute, and we want to keep to the schedule as much as possible. This means our Drama Kids should be fully costumed and ready to go on the hour. VIRTUAL BACKGROUNDS: Do you have virtual background capabilities on your device? If so, click on the show links below for some backgrounds you can use during our Zoom filming! If your device doesn't do virtual backgrounds, or if the backgrounds are glitching, no worries! Just think about the environment you are filming in. Check out our video below for ideas on how to create your most creative filming environment for class! REACTIONS!: Remember, a good actor is a REactor! We want you to stand out amongst the Zoom boxes! Never look bored, always be reacting, and HAVE FUN!
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES?: Don't sweat it! We're flexible! If your Drama Kid is experiencing technical difficulties during our zoom filming, we will come up with a shot-list for you to film at home. We will make it work! Okay, so by this point you should have the shots you needed to record done on your phone! But the question is, how do you get them to us? Here are three ways to do so! ***PLEASE do not Email, Facebook Message/Any other Social Media message, or Text your videos to us. The quality of the videos goes down A LOT by doing this, so read below to see the proper methods!*** 1. UPLOAD DIRECTLY TO ONEDRIVE! *our preferred method Prerequisite: A Microsoft Account (OR if you can quickly make one, it is free to do!) We are using OneDrive, an awesome cloud storage tool to place all videos that will be used for the filmed Spring plays, so if you have an account or are able to make one, here is the guide below: Step 1.) Click the OneDrive Link from your phone! Your teachers will be in touch via email with your class link, and it should look similar to below, but with your class location and play: Step 2. Upload your videos! On the screen will be an “Upload” button. Click on “Files”, then you will be taken to your Phone’s files, and you can select and begin uploading! I do recommend that your phone has enough Battery life and is connected to WiFi so it can upload safely and quickly! 2. SHARE YOUR VIDEOS FROM YOUR PERSONAL CLOUD STORAGE! If the method above doesn’t work, or if you are not comfortable with having a Microsoft Account, then follow this guide below: Cloud Storage Providers we typically see used are Google Drive and Dropbox.
If you have or can get Google Drive: Step 1.) Install the Google Drive app on your phone from the App Store, if its not already on there. Step 2.) Go to the app, and tap the colorful plus button, then tap Upload, and choose the videos you want to be uploaded. Be sure you have enough Battery life and are connected to WiFi when doing this! Step 3.) After they have uploaded, go to one of the videos that you uploaded to Google Drive. Tap on the button with 3 dots, and then tap Share. You can share it to: [email protected] Step 4.) Repeat Step 3 with each video you are submitting. We will receive the videos and they will be taken care of from there! If you have Dropbox: Step 1.) Install the Dropbox App on your phone, and then make sure it is connected with your Dropbox account. Step 2.) When it’s all set click on the blue plus button. Then tap, “Upload photos or video” and then select the videos you want to upload. Make sure you have enough Battery life and are connected to WiFi when doing this! Step 3.) When this is done, tap the 3 dots on the side of one of the videos, and then tap “Share” Then in the “Send to” area, put this email address: [email protected] Step 4.) Repeat Step 3 for each video to be submitted! 3. SHARE VIA WETRANSFER.COM If neither of the above works out, then here is another option: Go to https://wetransfer.com/ Then follow the instructions and send to this email address: [email protected] And that’s it! It would be the easiest for Drama Kids if you can follow Option 1 to directly upload to our OneDrive, but we hope with providing all three options that we have made this process easier for you! If you have any questions or technical difficulties with Uploading, feel free to email Mr. Josh at [email protected] and he would be happy to help! We appreciate and thank you all for your hard work as we move further into filming! |
